Piltdown Man: a worked example of epistemic standing
This article is a calibration bed, not a history. Piltdown Man was chosen because it has a floor: a controversy that closed. In 1912 Charles Dawson announced a skull from a gravel pit in Sussex that appeared to be the "missing link" between apes and humans. In 1953 it was shown to be a deliberate forgery — a medieval human cranium fitted to an orangutan jaw, stained to look ancient, the teeth filed by hand.
Because the answer is settled, the instrument has something to sort against. Each claim below is filed under an epistemic standing — what KIND of standing it has — so the demarcation is visible: a documented specimen, a sworn account, a debunking test, and a deduction sit in different buckets, and one deliberately-planted insinuation gets demoted when a challenger names its hidden premise.
The settled kernel
The fluorine absorption test applied by Kenneth Oakley, Joseph Weiner and Wilfrid Le Gros Clark in 1953 found the cranium and jaw had absorbed different amounts of fluorine, meaning they were of different ages and could not belong to one animal.
The contested cloud
More than thirty people have been named over a century as the possible forger — Dawson, Arthur Smith Woodward, Martin Hinton, Grafton Elliot Smith, even Arthur Conan Doyle. The naming is the phenomenon this instrument exists to expose: the volume of accusation is enormous and the adjudicated core is one man's documented, sole, repeated involvement.
